Unicorn Cake and Tutorial

By August 31, 2017 Cakes and More, Tutorials

Hello everybody!!

I can finally cross the Unicorn Cake from my to do list!!!

As you may have noticed there is an invasion of unicorns, definitely is the most trendy topic for birthdays, baby showers and even bridal showers and I understand why because they look really sweet and adorable.. and to be honest I am also in love with unicorns and I was crazy about making a Unicorn Cake.

So when my friend finally asked me to make a Unicorn Cake I was so happy that I was jumping around but I also thought that it was an excellent opportunity to give you a short tutorial about how to make the horn of the unicorn..but first some details about this cake:

  • It was a 8″ vanilla cake with Dulce de Leche and Nutella filling and buttercream icing.
  • It was covered and decorated with homemade marshmallows fondant.
  • The mane was made using the 1M Wilton piping tip.
  • The flowers were made using fondant cutters from this set.
  • The name was made using the Wilton Alphabets and Numbers Cut-Outs set that you can find here.
  • The eyes, the inner part of the ears and horn were made with homemade marshmallows fondant colored first in gray and later painted silver with this spray.

The process of making the horn was very easy, here I show you a couple of pictures tutorials so you can see how I made it:

  • Roll out to pieces of tapered fondant about the length of a bamboo skewer.

  • Twist the pieces together, I used water as a glue, and make sure that when you are twisting the horn is getting really tight.
  • Cut to the desire length and paint silver, if you want to make a gold horn I recommend making the horn with yellow fondant.
  • After the horn is completely dry insert to the cake using a bamboo stick…and that’s it!!!

As I mentioned before I can cross this cake out of my to do list but they are so beautiful and easy to make that I stay with the desire of doing more, more and more Unicorns Cakes..so I have to say this: welcome to my life Unicorns!!

Pineapple Cake and Tutorial

By August 11, 2017 Cakes and More, Tutorials

Hello Everybody!!

Yes, it’s still summer and it’s still very hot..and nothing more refreshing than fresh fruit to fight this heat, and if those fruits come in the form of cake then much better!!!

This is the reason why when I was asked to make a cake with a refreshing and tropical theme I immediately thought about this pineapple cake tutorial by The Icing Artist that I had seen several times on social networks.

Pineapple cakes are very trendy this summer and I loved this one in particular not only because is easy to do but because it is a super adorable cake and it was very related to the tropical theme that I had been requested to make.

In the tutorial the cake was covered with buttercream but I made my own version with fondant and I really like the  result..at the end of the post you will find the link of the video-tutorial to make this beautiful cake.

Here a picture of my Pineapple Cake:

Some details about this cake:

  • It was a 8″ vanilla cake with pineapple jam filling (off course LOL) and buttercream icing.
  • It was covered and decorated with homemade marshmallows fondant except for the black fondant which was prefabricated.
  • The pineapple leaves were made using the lilies cutter from this set.
  • The name was made using the Wilton Alphabet and Numbers Cut-Outs set that you can find here .
  • The diamond design that you can notice on the cake was made using this tool.

The cake was a hit, perfect for summer, very cute outside and the best of all…delicious inside!!

Video-tutorial about how to make this cake here.

I hope that when you see this tutorial you feel motivated to do it..the best excuse: it is still summer!! Thanks for reading!!

Hollywood Cake

By August 3, 2017 Cakes and More

Hello Everybody!!

If you were raised in a Latino family you should know that turning 15 is a big thing..

The 15 years old birthday party or “Quinceanera” as they call it in some countries, is almost like a wedding rehearsal..all the family is excited about making to the birthday girl a great party with a princess dress, a fancy dinner and a huge cake.

So you can imagine how frustrated my sister-in law was when my adorable niece, who is half Dominican and half American, told her that instead of a big party she wanted to do what she likes the most: watch movies at home with her friends…what???? Are you serious???

Yes, she was serious.. no princess dress, no fancy dinner and no huge cake!! Instead she wanted to wear jeans and t-shirt, pizza and pop corn for dinner and a Hollywood theme birthday cake.

After several days trying to change her mind, the attempt was in vain and the only option was to please her..at the end what was important was to respect her decision and make her happy.

And of course I was in the charge of the cake and I wanted to do something funny but with the glamorous touch of Hollywood and here you have the result:

Here some details about this cake:

  • The top tier was a 6″ and the bottom tier a 8″ both of them almond cake filled with pineapple jam and buttercream icing.
  • The cake was covered and decorated with homemade marshmallows fondant except for the black and red fondant which were prefabricated.
  • The stars were made with this fondant cutter and inserted to the cake using bamboo sticks.
  • The topper was a toy and the pop corn was real.
  • For the number 15 and the letter N, I used the FMM funky letters fondant cutters that you can find here

All I can say is that my niece was extremely happy and without a doubt this was the perfect celebration for her..and here a picture of my beautiful niece with her friends and off course her cake:

And that’s it for now, hope you enjoyed this post..maybe you feel related if you have teenagers around!! Thanks for reading!!

SpongeBob Cake

By July 21, 2017 Cakes and More

Hello Everybody!!

I don’t know why but there is a stage where kids literally become obsessed with SpongeBob…and my son is living it!!

Since my son was born and until he turned 3 years old I always decided the themes for his birthday cakes based on the cartoons that were attractive to him but when he was going to turn 4 his decision was radical: a SpongeBob cake.

To be honest SpongeBob it’s not my favorite..too much drama for a cartoon, in my mind I already had planned a Paw Patrol cake but he totally refused, for him SpongeBob is the best of the best..so I had no choice, I had to please my favorite little costumer and make him happy with the cake that he chose for the first time..and this mommy is a little bit nostalgic because her baby is already growing up and taking his own decisions..Okay, okay lets go back to the cake LOL

Here’s a picture of the SpongeBob cake:

I almost forgot to take a picture of the cake, so this is a last minute one..here some details about this cake:

  • It was a rectangular 9 x 13 vanilla cake filled with pineapple jam and buttercream icing..I don’t know if you have noticed but SpongeBob is wider at the top so a cut a little bit of the corners of the bottom to give a more SpongeBob shape.
  • The cake was covered and decorated with Homemade Marshmallows Fondant except for the brown, red and black which was prefabricated fondant.
  • The eyes were made using round cutters and  I free hand made the rest of the details.
  • For the holes in SpongeBob’s body I used the back of a measuring spoons set.
  • For the name I used the Wilton Alphabet and Numbers Fondant Cut-Outs set that you can find here

Its hard to express how excited my son was with his cake so to give you an idea here you have a picture of my beloved little man cutting his cake and also a picture of some cake leftovers:

Although I am not a big SpongeBob fan I must admit that to make this cake was really funny and also it was easier than I thought…but the best thing of all was to know that my favorite client was satisfied and happy on his birthday number 4, now let’s wait to see what he’s going to chose next year!!

Hello Everybody!!

It is a fact that we are in the middle of summer..here in Central Florida right now the heat is terrible and it is almost mandatory to take a trip to the pool or even better to the beach!!

And it is for this reason that I have decided to bring you this cake option which is so appropriate for the season: NAUTICAL CAKES.

Definitely Nautical Cakes are one of my favorites themes, for me these cakes are one of the most elegant and refreshing that I have made, they are always trendy and they are also very versatile, you can use them in birthday and in baby showers as well.

When I make these cakes I always like to put a border in the shape of waves to give a more beachy touch so I included a small picture-tutorial so you can see how I do it and how easy it is:

  • You just need to cut a ribbon of blue fondant and with a round cutter cut the borders of the ribbon and voila!! Really quick and easy..right??

And here you have a couple of pictures with some of the nautical cakes that I have made:

SO if your planning a nautical party here you have a couple of great ideas, I hope you like them and that they will be useful to you..thank you so much for reading and Happy Summer!!

Hello Everybody!!

As you may have noticed Emojis are everywhere..these nice little figurines can be found in clothes, in decoration items for kitchen and bathroom and also you can find it in desserts such as cookies, ice creams and off course cakes!!

In teenagers Emojis are a fashion trend, they use it for everything and it draws my attention when I see some chats where words are replaced for Emojis and to be honest sometimes I also do the same to give a funny touch to the conversation LOL.

So when my sister in law told about an Emoji cake for my beautiful niece who was turning 8 years old, I was not surprise at all that she chose that theme for her birthday party and I immediately knew that this was going to be one of the most original, funny and memorable cakes of my collection.

Here you have a picture of my Emoji Cake:

Some details about this adorable cake:

  • The top tier is a 6″ and the bottom tier is 8″ both of them vanilla cake with strawberry and dulce de leche filling and buttercream icing.
  • The cake is covered and decorated with homemade marshmallows fondant except for the black fondant which is prefabricated.
  • The Emojis were made by hand and I chose the Emojis that I found easier to do by looking at my phone.
  • The flowers, stars , hearts were made using fondant cutters and I insert them to the cake using bamboo sticks.
  • The letters were made using the Wilton Alphabet and Numbers Fondant Cut-Outs set that you can find here

Let me tell you something, the face of happiness that my niece put on when she saw her cake is indescribable, instead of hugging me she wanted to hug the cake..and for me that was my biggest reward and the main reason why I love so much what I do!!

Hope you enjoyed this post, and thank you so much for reading!!

  • Hollow the center of your cupcakes, I used a cupcake corer but you can use a knife.
  • Fill with your favorite color sprinkles.

  • Frost your cupcakes , I usually make my own icing but when it comes to red I use store bought but of course you can use white icing and they will look great, everything depends on what color you prefer..you can even take this cupcakes to the next level and combine different colors like red, white and blue..we can be as creative as we want!!
  • To achieve this swirl I used ATECO 844 tip.

Graduation Hat Cake Tutorial

By June 23, 2017 Cakes and More, Tutorials

Hello everybody!!

Let’s keep the graduation mood..this time I bring another option that you can use for your grad celebration and is a cake in the shape of a graduation hat!!

Last time I show you how to make a graduation hat cake topper but if you don’t have enough time to make a lot of decorations for your graduation cake or if you have a last minute request but at the same time you want to do something pretty, original , elegant and no time consuming at all then this is the right cake for you!!

I always try to share easy ideas with you and this is not the exception..again, this is really easy to make and it’s a cake that you can have fully decorated in one hour..yes, one hour!!

You can use the color of your convenience and  you can make it as big as you want ..I made this one in black and it was a small 6” round cake because it was meant to be used as a cupcake tower topper.

So here you have the instructions:

  • Cover your cake with fondant.

  • Cut a piece of cake board into a square shape, the size will depend on the size of your cake.
  • Using your fingers cover the entire surface of the cake board with shortening, this will be acting as a glue for the fondant
  • Cover in fondant.

  • Stick the covered cake board  with water to your covered cake placing it in a diamond shape, let it dry for a couple of minutes.

  • To make the tassel cut a piece of fondant into a rectangular shape, the size will depend on the size of your cake..this one was 20 x 6 cm.
  • From the half to the bottom cut into strips and then roll pressing the top part at the same time.
  • If necessary cut the tip of the tassel to eliminate protruding parts.
  • Attach to the cake board with water and let it dry for a couple of minutes…and that’s it!!!

Here you have a picture of the final product:

To take the cake to the next level  I put a ribbon and wrote ”Class of 2017″ to decorate the cake board, of course this is optional.

And here you have a picture of the cake at the graduation party as a topper of the cupcake tower:

As you can see, there are so many options when it comes to celebrate a graduation party and this beautiful cake is one of them..I hope you find this tutorial useful and you can feel encouraged to make this simply but elegant graduation hat cake, you’ll see that it is easier than you think..just remember that everything needs a little bit of PRACTICE and PATIENCE!!

Cecilia

Little Cow Cake and Tutorial

By June 4, 2017 Cakes and More, Tutorials

Hello Everybody!!

It’s been a couple of years since I made this Little Cow Cake but it’s still one of my favorites.

When I was asked to make a farm inspired cake, Presley’s mommy told me that she was in love with cows and off course my immediate thought was to put a nice cow as a topper so I decided once again to step out of my comfort  zone and make the little cow just following my instincts, I had already read a little bit about how to make fondant figurines and basically everything start the same way so I decided not only to do this little cow on my way but also to make a tutorial with the purpose of being able to share it with others.

Here you have a picture of my Little Cow Cake:

Details about  this cake:

  • It was a 8” vanilla cake with buttercream icing.
  • It was covered with green homemade marshmallow fondant and decorated with yellow and white HMMF .
  • The fence was hand cut and made with brown prefabricated fondant.
  • The flowers were  made with a flower fondant cutter and I put light green dragees in the center of each flower.
  • The  grass was made with a garlic presser, no extruder at the moment LOL.
  • The name was made with the FMM funky letter fondant cutter that I bought here

Close up picture of the cute little cow:

Let me tell you something, I was REALLY HAPPY with the final product, this cow topper is really easy to make and also very versatile, in this case I wanted the cow to look really girly so I put a flower in her head but you can play with it and put a bow or a hat or even earrings to give it a funny touch to it LOL.

The tutorial about how to make this cow is in the COW TUTORIAL album on my Facebook page Cake Creations by Cecilia, here’s the link:

https://www.facebook.com/469958093028065/photos/?tab=album&album_id=580181418672398

And that’s it for now, hope you like this post and find the moment to make this beautiful cow..if you have any questions leave a comment and I will be more than happy to help, but don’t forget to give it a try, with a little bit of PRACTICE and PATIENCE you can make wonderful things!!

Blessings,

Cecilia

Ladybug Cake

By May 27, 2017 Cakes and More

Hello everybody!!

Today I want to share with you my Ladybug Cake, I was very excited to do this cake because it was an adorable theme for a first birthday party but at the same time I was a little bit nervous because it was my first time covering a cake with store bought fondant.

After trying like a million times to achieve homemade red fondant I get tired and decided  to  buy a prefabricated one and let me tell you something..NO REGRETS!!

After this experience when it comes to red, black or brown fondant my decision it’s already made: PREFABRICATED FONDANT it’s the answer for me!!

So here you have a picture of my Ladybug Cake:

Some details about this cake:

  • The cake was a 8″ vanilla cake with buttercream icing.
  • It was cover with Wilton red fondant and decorated with green, white and pink homemade fondant.
  • The Ladybug was hand made with Wilton black and red fondant using a tutorial that I found in Google.
  • The number one was made with the FMM funky letter fondant cutter that I bought here
  • The name was made with a Martha Stewart silicone mold that I bought in my local Michael’s store with my 40% discount coupon LOL.

Here a close up of the Ladybug figurine:

I can tell that my experience with this fondant brand was really good,  for me working time was shorter compared with homemade marshmallow fondant because it dries more quickly but when you get used to handling it you will feel very pleased with the results…remember  that everything needs a little bit of PRACTICE and PATIENCE!!

Blessings,

Cecilia
